exchange traded funds or etfs are securities that are created to behave the same way as a specific index or a collection of different securities. this means that the etf will track or move in tandem with the securities it is designed to follow. dean brothers investment bank is creating an etf to track the performance of the oil sector. dean brothers submits a detail plan to the sec, explaining ? make the fund and what stocks will be unit. after approval, dean brothers contacts other forms of funds that holds the stocks to be included in the etf. these stocks are sample, and delivered to a custodial bank. dean brothers oil etf shares are then created, based on the equivalent value of the pool of shares on the custodial bank. ? can now sell the etf shares to other investors on the market. ? when an investor wants to sell an etf, he can redeem etf shares for the stock held to the custodial bank, and then sell those shares on the market. however, it is much more common to simply sell the etf shares, because they trade at the same value as the underlying shares. although it is possible that an etf can trade for more or less than the value of the underlying shares, this difference is minimized by investors who exploit even the small ? etf arbitrage. there are many types of etfs focusing on specific indexes, market segments and even entire countries. efts give investors the ability to diversify over a broad market sector with a single investment.
