a company's operating cash flow or ocf is the money generated from its business activities. ocf is simply calculated as revenues minus operating expenses. you can find a company's operating cash flow on its quarterly and annual cash flow statements. operating cash flow is an important factor to remember because it tells investors and management whether or not a company can pay its bills. cash inflows must exceed cash outflows for a business to be profitable in the long run. let's say steve's sporting goods has $50,000,000 in total assets. however, steve is only bringing in $10,000,000 a year in operating cash flow while he has $20,000,000 in bills to pay. at this rate, it won't be long before steve runs out of money and goes out business. businesses and their investors want to see operating cash flow that's higher than operating expenses. cash flow alone can't tell you whether a company is financially sound, however. it is important to know the source of the incoming cash such as whether or not it's coming from sales or if the company is liquidating assets. companies must be profitable to survive long term.
